Yoga need not be expensive

Most people think that to perform yoga, one must be with a group of people in a serene place like a garden or the beach.

Although yoga is a popular group activity, expert yoga instructor Dunia de los Reyes says even first-timers can be “one with the universe” inside the comfort of their own homes.

“It’s all very simple. You must only have the discipline and the will to do it,” Trainer says, who was invited by Sara Lee Philippines to teach yoga to a group of journalists here.

Some people seem to have apprehensions and hesitations toward yoga. Contrary to misconception, yoga can be an inexpensive activity as there are many studios that offer yoga classes that are not very pricey, she says.

She adds that the experience you get out of the exercise works under the same mechanics as other types of workout routines. Yoga, however, also focuses on the idea of uniting the mind, body, and the spirit, she adds.

As a tip, Dunia says first-timers should not strain themselves by attempting to perform complicated postures or poses.

“Like any exercise, you master the basics first. When that part is perfected, that’s when you push it a little further and try harder variations,” she says.

Techniques in breathing must also be practiced in performing yoga and that failure to coordinate correct breathing with the proper movements might cause light-headedness or dizziness, Trainer says.

Dunia says the good thing about yoga is that you can easily do it while at home, as you only need your yoga mat and time.

“You need not be in a group to perform yoga really. In fact, starting yoga at home if time allows you to can go a long way,”
