How to Find a Yoga Teacher

Need a new yoga instructor? Here's what you should look for in the perfect yogi guru

Training.
  • A teacher should be certified to teach yoga. But also ask about what else she's studied. "She should have a background in anatomy, physiology, and yoga philosophy," says Susannah Bruder, director of Yoga Sita in San Francisco. Individual attention. She should ask if you have any injuries or medical problems and modify poses accordingly.
Connection.
  • Do you like her? Does she call you by name? Does she converse with students one-on-one?
Approach.
  • Yoga is more about calming your mind than getting your butt into shape. The "seven limbs" of yoga include work on breath, meditation, and other ways of living, and a good yoga teacher should be versed in all of these.
